To Name Or Not To Name A Teddy Bear? That Is The Question.

Well I’ve been wondering about the answer to this question for a very long time.  Finding the perfect name for a new creation has to be the hardest part of bear making!  No seriously,  It’s so difficult.  For the first couple of years I felt that a bear should have a cute name, maybe something from nature like Bracken or Barley,  Amber or Topaz and I was quite happy with that, until I ran out of options.  Of course not wanting to duplicate any name, it soon became impossible to think of anything new.

Then I thought why not name my bears human names with a twist like Toeby or Pursey but again I soon ran out of ideas there too.  I swear it’s even more difficult that naming a child.  After all you have nine months to think of a name for your new baby!  Then I hit on the idea of giving each bear a number instead of a name.  Kind of like an artist will give each limited edition vase or pot a number.  But it was a fleeting thought and ashamed of myself I resorted to the good old Oxford English Dictionary.

There must be a wealth of interesting “names” to find.  How about Glory or Glitter?  Erm not bad!  Hebe or Heckle?  NO! That’s just being rediculous.  Discussing this very topic with one of my customers at a fair recently, she said that the name of a bear can literally mean the difference between giving a loving new home to a cutie or leaving a sad little bruin sitting on the shelf.  No pressure then!!!  I guess it’s back to thinking long and hard and looking for inspiration whereever I can. Oh and asking long suffereing relations what they think!

If you have any suggestions then please, oh please comment!

I say yes to naming bears… It’s all part of the character that you are creating in your imagination and the name you choose is as much a part of the creativity as the design of the bear itself.
If I saw a bear I loved, the name would not put me off…I’d just live with it, change it, or perhaps give the bear an every day name and keep the other name as the ‘official title’ name.
I actually enjoy searching through name options but then I don’t make that many bears to get stuck with my options yet! :-) Sometimes a bear will tell you his/her name in the making!
I work in a shop that sells bears and we often get asked “Do you have a bear called….” so it seems some people will buy a bear with a name or the right name before a bear without a name! Usually they want a bear with a child’s name though… so if your stuck I’d probably look at the most popular names of the present time.
    Phew…bet your sorry you asked!! :-) )
